The Top Attractions of St. Louis
Bellefontaine and Calvary Cemeteries
I know what you are thinking, "Cemeteries?" Yes, these are cemeteries, but they also feature some of the most beautiful gardens in the city. Built during the mid 1800s, a period known to bring beauty into everything, both cemeteries feature long paths, grassy hills, and picturesque trees. Bellefontaine is the final resting place for many well known Missourians, including William Clark (of the Lewis and Clark expedition), and poet Sara Teasdale. Notable burials at the Calvary Cemetery include author and playwright Tennessee Williams and Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman. Both cemeteries are known for the innovative and architecturally astounding headstones and mausoleums located inside their gates.
The Gateway Arch
When you think of St. Louis your mind usually brings up a picture of a huge silver arch overlooking the city. The Arch is without a doubt the most visited attraction in St. Louis and with very good reason. In addition to being able to take tram ride to the very top of the Arch, nearly 630 feet in fact, you can also tour the Museum of Westward Expansion, watch informational films in the gallery, dine in an outdoor cafe, and even take a riverboat ride. While vacationing in St. Louis it is a generally smart idea to reserve an entire day for spending time at the Arch.
Anheuser-Busch Brewery
See the world famous Anheuser-Busch Brewery, the home of some of the world's favorite beers. While there are several breweries scattered throughout the U.S. the largest is here, in St. Louis. While visiting the brewery you will be taken on a tour that explains every process in beer making. You will be able to visit the storage building, where barley, hops, water, and other ingredients are stored, as well as the bottling plant, where the beer is bottled and canned. At the end of your tour you will be greeted by free samples and some snacks. You will even be able to visit the world famous Budweiser Clydesdales in their stable and paddocks.
Busch Stadium
Another contribution to St. Louis from the Busch family is Busch Stadium, home of the World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals. This controversial sports arena isn't to be missed. "But why is a sports stadium controversial?" you ask. Well, in 2005 the entire stadium was demolished and rebuilt in what some feel was a huge waste of money and memories. But the new Busch Stadium is better than ever featuring tons of seating and great amenities. So, if you are in town at the right time, grab some tickets and head out to Busch Stadium and catch a game of baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals.
